A hotel on Albert Street since 1913

The Royal Albert Arms Hotel was erected in 1913, standing mid-block on a narrow winding street in Winnipeg's Exchange District — itself a National Historic Site.

It was designed by architect Edgar D. McGuire and built in the summer of 1913. With 53 private rooms, the hotel catered to “the salesmen, travellers and visitors on business in the adjacent warehouse district”. Its opening was overshadowed by the simultaneous opening of the Fort Garry Hotel.

McGuire gave it “an impressive Spanish Colonial Revival-style front of brick and stone that opens on to a modestly appointed interior”. The building is one of the small hostelries “built to serve business and pleasure travellers during Winnipeg's 1900-14 boom”, and it still performs its original function.

The Albert has been hosting all styles of music for over 50 years — jazz, blues, rock, punk, EDM and more. Long John Baldry, Kilowatt, Green Day, Tom Jackson, Hüsker Dü and Propagandhi have all played the stage.

The building was designated a Winnipeg Landmark Heritage Structure by the City of Winnipeg on May 19, 1981, and was listed on the Canadian Register of Historic Places on February 21, 2007.
